Here are my thoughts and experiences with a small selection of Ugandan beers.
As with most countries in Africa and the rest of the world people love beer. There’s pleanty of tourist standard beers as well as the very dodgy beers the locals drink and of course self brewed whiskey. The thing about drinking beer in a country with unreliable electricity is that you usually drink beer somewhere between room temperature and warmer. And the irony of drinking in a better hotel or bar is that you can choose if your want your beer warm or cold. I assume this is becasue most locals have been brought up on warm beer so are not too keen on the cold stuff.
Here’s a selection of the beers I came across during my 1 month cycle tour in South West Uganda:
Bell (4%) : Light in flavour and strengh, a nice afternoon beer.
Club (5%): A nice sparkling and refreshing pilsner beer.
Tusker : Available as a light refreshing pilsner or in a dark beer which is very nice.
Nile (6.2): The fuller flavour beer with a little bite, though was a little heavy on my guts in combination with malaria pills.
Guinness export (7.5%): of course this is just a little bit of civilisation in this crazy world.
On top of this there’s the stuff the locals drink like ESB, Eagle and other crap that might just make you go blind.
