A year later than planned I once again teamed up with TravellingTwo point 5 and Stijn for an Easter weekend of cycling the VennBahn.
The VennBahn is a converted railway line running from Aachen in Germany to Troisvierges in Luxemburg via Belgium. The route is about 125km and apart from a couple of small hills and some detours its almost flat, just like most rails to trails conversions, therefore perfect for a 2 gear Brompton :).
We cycled the route in reverse because that worked out slightly better for us with train connections during the holiday weekend. The first stage for me was from Amsterdam to Luxembourg which went quite smoothly on a couple of inter city trains due to my handy Brompton/trailer combination.
We were all testing new set ups for future trips so we looked like quite the cycling circus.
We spent our first night camping just outside the picturesque and lumpy Luxembourg city.
After the steep climb into the city and the first of several coffee+cake stops of the trip we took a surprisingly cheap local train to the start of the route in Troisvierges.
What followed were 3 relaxed days of cycling mainly asphalt cycle trails (with occasional shorts stretches of gravel or track).
Site seeing and border crossings:
Some strange Belgian signage:
Some catching up during culinary delights:
Some camping:
Some Luke entertaining:
Some relaxing:
And of course, a visit from the Easter bunny:
Here’s a little video that Friedel made after the weekend.
Thanks Stijn, Andrew, Friedel and Luke for a great escape, and some awesome photo’s. Until next time 🙂
Hey there Desert Man/Ice man/Brompton Man! Nice to see a blog post again. Looks like great fun and perhaps a little exhausting for Luke’s mum and dad?
I’m so envious of those fantastic separate cycling paths on the VennBahn. One of these days I’ll head over back to the land of my ancestors and check it out myself.
Greetings from Australia. 🙂
