What a coincidence, I've just spent two or three months trawling through insurance options only to come to the same result i.e. worldwideinsure before I read this post. Most other companies are rapidly dropping all cover for inter-continental touring including BMC who, until recently, would cover it. Don't know why. Update.... Essential Travel won't cover bike touring for two years but only offer backpacker policies where you do a bit of bike touring as an incidental activity rather than the main activity. Hi Shane, Did you spot Essential Travel when doing your research? http://www.essentialtravel.co.uk/travelinsurance/cycletouring.asp They do up to 2 year policies for cycle tourists but you haven't mentioned them so I was wondering if you'd ruled them out for any reason or whether they just didn't show up on your radar last year. Shame American express changed their rules. They were the only company who would cover me for 2 years in Africa. I'm going with worldwide insure for my next trip. Couldn't find reviews from people who have had to claim but they cover my needs at reasonable price. V flexible. Will have to wait and see if yet come through if I have trouble. Hi Bruno, I think cycling in Uganda in March will be more fun than cycling at home in March:). It depends largely on your plans. If you stick to the main roads it should be ok, but the dirt roads are mainly impossible or v. difficult once wet. Andrew, Just to help you out, the iPhone4 needs stable 5v DC current to charge it. Any deviation from that and it will shut down. So any battery with a 5v DC output will do it. Anything that can charge to a USB cable and you'll be pretty right. Not trying to take traffic away from Shane's excellent blog, but I've got my own that may or may not help you about the charging set up. @Andy, Certainly didn't get much wiser, the choice is very limited if you want to go away for more than a year. @ Andrew: 1. I'm afraid I have no idea about iphone4. 2. Bear in mind the Varta isn't a buffer so you can charge batteries with it or use it to charge a device, it wont charge a device directly from your dynamo. The switch to charge is a small push switch which you can't really accidently switch on if thats what you mean. 3. Rugged is not a word I would use to describe this device. Hi Shane, could you answer a couple of questions about that Varta battery charger please. 1) Can it charge an iPhone 4 ? 2) How secure is the switch that controls charging batteries/charging devices ? 3) How well made / rugged is the unit ? I've been using the much cheaper Extreme SCH500F and it won't charge an iPhone to capacity, the raised switch gets turned on in bags and drains your batteries and build quality is flimsy. we love what you are doing and want you to carry on so that we can read more. I love your honest opinions on your equipment and would love to read a bit more about your bike, your equipment setup and a day in the life, on the road...

wij spraken elkaar tijdens wintertrektocht twee weken geleden. Hierbij nog het beloofde van het guesthouse in west uganda. Ik kan je de locatie absoluut aanraden! Prachtige plek en een plek ook waarin je heel goed sociale contacten in Uganda kunt opdoen.

als je me vraagt wat heb je het meest in Afrika gedaan, dan zeg ik "wachten". Wachten tot de bus een keer komt en als je er in zit, wachten tot ie stilvalt. Daar heb jij met je eigen vervoer geen last van. Maar Afrika zou Afrika niet zijn als het jou niet de echte Afrika ervaring zou geven :). Hopelijk komt je fiets snel en kun je doen waar voor je gekomen bent. Ik wens je veel fietsplezier en veel geduld.
