Dont panic:
With only 2 weeks to go I’m making the transition from slowing working through my “to do list” to mild stress then onto running around like a headless chicken.
I’m trying to do he 101 jobs around the house I promised to do before I leave, preventative maintenance on my bike (and hopefully pack it this weekend), and organise dozens of other seemingly trivial but time consuming things. All this while still working full time, waking up too early everyday because my mind says “still need to do this still need to do that” and of course nothing is going according to plan. But worst of all I’ve hardly had time to do any cycling in recent weeks (guess I’ll have plenty of time for that later though).
A welcome distraction:
Up until now I’ve done pretty much no route planning, and was just assuming something would come along or I’d just wing it out of Cape Town. But today I got an email from Paul Morris with some tips for my route for the first week. So today I thought stuff it, and have spent the whole afternoon hanging over my map and plugged into googlemaps, thanks to google streetview I’ve got a nice impression of the route 62. Ideal really, the occasional pass to keep me alert, fairly flat, mountains left and right and wine tasting along the way, what else could a cyclist possible want from a route:).
After too long waiting and too many distractions it finally hit me like a train today. I was totally overwhelmed by joy and anticipation.
Its going to happen!
My trip is real!
and is coming soon!
Looking forward to following your adventure! I am praying for your good health, travelling safety, and FUN!
Thanks Bonnie, all prayers and good luck are welcome for this trip:)
The countdown has now really started. I know you can hardly wait and I want you to know that I understand this. With love, Linda
Shane! So awesome to hear of your excursion!
I am one of a two-man team leaving on a tour in January 2012. We’re South Africans, riding Zim, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. We’re doing to raise awareness and funds for development of clean water access in rural sub-Saharan Africa. We’ll be following you and Peter Gostelow as we prepare to leave and after and, who knows, maybe see you on the road!
Wind at your back mate,
Alex
Sounds like a good project to cycle for, though starting 2 months behind me I suspect you’ll be in Zambia long before me:)
Emmy
Bedankt 🙂 Stay tuned…..
Hey Shane,
Forget about the maps, they seldom bear any relation to what’s on the ground anyway 😉 Hope to meet up with you in Prince Albert or somewhere along the way. PS Good bike shop in Cape Town is Crosstown Cycles 021-761-0112 (Olaf)
Call me when you land in Cape Town
Thanks Johann, I’ll be in touch once I get a local sim card, and some time before I come knocking on your straw door:)
